Hello Folks,

Confusion concerning four points with HH. A simple answer!!

1) Discussion on the rate at which people are loading excess iron.
It is the fact that people ARE overloading with iron and no matter at what speed it is taking place, the excess must come out.

2) Blood volume. Little credit is given to this subject, but people’s blood volume can differ greatly. People who suffer from ME/CFS for example, can have as much as one third less blood volume than usual.
So when starting the phlebs, it is always a good idea to start off with a small amount to avoid possible adverse side effects and increase the amount as tolerance allows.

3) Supplements? I have found, that a normal balanced diet is all that is necessary; supplements should be used only if diagnosed as lacking and then monitored.
Iron Overload Diseases Assn states: “Those in protocol treatment will benefit from a B complex of vitamins, including B6, folic acid or folate and B12. Vitamin E - below 50 International Units daily is also beneficial.”

4) Acquired Iron Overload:
Any person can load iron without the HH genes from circumstances such as Blood Transfusions, Iron Supplements, Manufactured foods with added iron, Thalasaemia, Meat and long term cooking in iron pots.

If a person is diagnosed with Iron Overload, the only thing to do IS GET THE EXCESS IRON OUT AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. I have seen too many mis-diagnosis made using the word “genes” or the interpretation of blood tests as a reason to treat or not. How the excess iron got into the body is not important, it shouldn’t be there and must be removed.

I have found that Iron is a necessary mineral for people to consume, but any excess to normal daily requirements becomes POISON. Even a small excess is too much.

With this thought in mind, the understanding of HH becomes very clear and how to deal with it.

If you think of iron as being ‘the villain’, not ‘the goodie’, this will put you in the right frame of mind concerning it.

PREVENTION of any type of excess iron in the body should be a person’s first thought if they are to have a disease and symptom free life with HH.

This has been my experience over 31 years of having to deal with the disorder and eventually correcting and surviving life threatening situations and coming out of them in a healthy symptom free state of health (the CHS Forum Monitor knows my heart condition).
