Where To Go For a Genetic Test

Consult Your Doctor or a Private Testing Lab

Genetic testing for hemochromatosis is available through your doctor or you can arrange one by yourself through a private testing laboratory.

Getting the test through your doctor requires a blood sample and is covered under all provincial health care plans. The results may take up to two months to become available and then become a part of your government medical record. Prior to any genetic testing through public health care, you may wish to consider securing insurance for life, disability, critical illness and/or extended health. Private genetic testing kits are available to purchase online. The sample is collected painlessly through a mouth swab and results are available soon after the laboratory receives the sample. The test is discreet and personal, and results are not shared with anyone other than the client.
